Obviously, this is an autobiographical novel. However, the border between the author’s real experiences and fiction is hard to perceive. The narration flows smoothly, without joints and seams, which inspires trust to the author. This is particularly important in describing a man’s ability to resist the blows of fate when he is weakened both physically and socially by his invalidity sustained in pursuit of his favorite occupation. Overall, the novel is full of situations in which the hero receives a blow from what has been for him a pillar and a source of strength,: his love, friendship, business and favorite hobby. However, the author does not abandon his hero in a deep abyss. Everyone has a chance for salvation, assured by the belief in invariable values that bond people together. The choice of diving as a background against which the hero grows spiritually gives the author an array of opportunities for creating associative links and striking analogies. The author’s background as a professional diver plus the vivid style make these allusions dazzling, compelling and convincing.

I have known the author of the book for eighteen years now. All through these years, we have actively cooperated as amateur diving fans. I never stop admiring Dmitry’s energy and his attitude to life, work, and the environment. I can envy myself that I have an enduring partner relationship with such a rational, sincere and inquisitive colleague. I whole-heartedly hope the book will be embraced by the readers, and wish Dmitry implementation of all his ideas, both conceived and awaiting conception. The best of luck!
